Athlone - just 8 kilometres away - is our nearest town. It has an abundance of interesting tourist attractions.

Athlone Castle Visitor Centre

Dominating the town of Athlone, this Norman Castle has panoramic views of the River Shannon. Features include exhibitions on the siege of Athlone, life of John McCormack, Shannon wildlife, folklore and military museums.

Clonmacnoise (20 mins drive)

ClonmacnoiseA most precious Irish jewel is an early Christian site founded by Saint Ciaran in the 6th century on the banks of the River Shannon. The site includes the ruins of a cathedral, eight churches (10th-18th century), two round towers, three high crosses and a large collection of early Christian grave slabs. The original high crosses and grave slabs are on display in the visitor centre. There is an audio-visual show as well as a number of exhibitions.

Bog Rail Tour, Clonmacnoise

Bog Rail TourThis is a unique opportunity to enjoy a guided tour by train around the internationally renownedraisedbog. The trip across this desert of cutaway bog is a journey through time, and will be a memorable exploration of its fascinating history.

Belvedere House and Gardens (30 mins drive)

A magnificent early 18th century stately home stands on 160 acres of parkland on the shores of Lough Ennell and has recently been restored and is open to the public 7 days a week from April to October.

Cornalea Trackway Visitors Centre (30 mins drive)

This is an iron age bog road which was built in 148 BC across the boglands close to the River Shannon. The road is the longest of its kind to have been uncovered in Europe and was excavated over the years by Professor Barry Rafferty, U.C.D. Inside the building an 18 metre stretch of preserved bog is on permanent display in a specially designed hall. Guided tours on the hour.

Locke's Distillery Museum (30 mins drive)

Locke's DistilleryBelieved to be the oldest licensed pot still distillery in the world. Licensed in 1757, Locke's produced whiskey for over 200 years. A guided tour through the only small pot still left in Ireland is provided following the process from grinding of the grain right through to casking of the whiskey.

Golfing

GolfingGlasson Golf Course (5 mins) Surrounded on three sides by Lough Ree, the views from everywhere on the course are breathtaking. Glasson has established a reputation as being one of the most scenic and challening courses in Irish golf.

Mount Temple Golf Course (10 mins) A superb 18-hole championship course, traditional in style built on a dry natural esker based site.

Athlone Golf Course (15 mins) Excellent golf on an excellent mature course.

There are many more courses within a 30 minute drive.

Walking

Walking around Glasson is a must for anyone staying at Glasson Stone Lodge. Enjoy the Glasson Trail which is signposted along the road and takes you through villages and unspoiled countryside. It lets you admire from a height at Ballykeeran the majestic inner lakes. Or experience the quiet secluded walk through the bog with no disturbances from traffic just the singing of birds and experience traditional turf (peat) cutting.

Boating

Boating on the ShannonBoat hire is available locally. This is a unique experience and one does not have to be experienced to take part. Boats which are available for hire, vary from small row boats to large cruisers.

Fishing

FishingThe River Shannon and Lough Ree is noted for its large Pike and there is good Trout fishing throughout the season. The inner lakes hold an abundance of Bream, Perch, Rudd, Roach and Tench.

FishingGood river fishing is also available along the River Inny, north of Glasson and the Brosna which offers wet and dry fly fishing for trout of 2-3 lbs with occasional specimens up to 8 lbs.

Aquatic - Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Tufted Duck, Coot, Heron, Mallard, Whoofer Swan, Black Headed Gull, Mute Swan, Redshank (wader), Lapwing (land), Moorhen, Artic Tern.
